Umiya Mobile (UML) Q4 FY26 Profit Surges 168% on Store-Led Volume, But Margins Stay Skinny

Umiya Mobile's Q4 FY26 profit jumped 168% as revenue soared 53% on aggressive store expansion, yet net margins remain wafer-thin at 1.1%.

Umiya Mobile's Q4 FY26 profit surged 168% YoY to ₹5.41 crore, driven by a 53% revenue jump to ₹471 crore from new store openings. However, the net profit margin improved only slightly to 1.1%, highlighting the high-volume, low-margin nature of its retail expansion.

For Umiya Mobile, growth is a story of relentless store additions. The retailer's Q4 FY26 numbers show a business running hard to expand its footprint, with revenue and profit surging on sheer volume. The catch is that profitability is barely keeping pace, a tension that defines its high-volume, low-margin trade.

The quarter saw revenue climb 53% year-on-year to ₹470.91 crore, while profit jumped 168% to ₹5.41 crore. Sequentially, sales grew 29% from the December quarter. The full year was equally strong, with FY26 revenue at ₹836 crore, up 49% from the prior year.

Why the profit surge didn't lift margins

The spectacular profit growth was almost entirely volume-led. Expenses rose nearly as fast as revenue, up 49% YoY, keeping a lid on margin expansion. The net profit margin improved by just 40 basis points to 1.1%.

Research from StockFin.ai notes operating margins remain negative. A key reason is the business model: shelf prices match online rates, so most margin comes from supplier discounts. These trade discounts, worth ₹48.2 crore in FY26, are now deducted from purchase costs instead of being booked as other income.

The cash cost of expansion

Store growth is capital intensive. Each new outlet requires ₹35-40 lakh in fit-out and ₹60-70 lakh in working capital for inventory, according to the company's investor presentation. This is evident in the cash flow.

Operating cash flow was a modest ₹2.98 crore for FY26, as per Upstox data, after a negative ₹15.16 crore the year before. The cash conversion cycle stretched to 28 days in FY26, up from 20 days in FY22, as inventory days rose.

Management's roadmap for FY27 and beyond

The expansion is set to continue. Management aims for 500-600 stores, targeting a turnover of ₹1,200 crore. It plans to enter Mumbai, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha in 2026, funded internally with no immediate fundraising plans.

On the May 2026 earnings call, the managing director outlined a goal to lift EBITDA margin to about 3% by FY28. This would come from lower setup costs, combo offers, and larger purchase commitments. The B2B segment, which contributed 27% of FY26 revenue, is seen reaching 35% in three years.

Key Points

  • Revenue growth of 53% YoY in Q4 was driven by aggressive physical store expansion into new states.
  • Net profit margin remains thin at 1.1%, as expenses kept pace with sales in the high-volume, low-margin retail model.
  • Operating cash flow turned positive but is minimal, with working capital stretched by inventory needs for new stores.
  • Management targets 500-600 stores and a 3% EBITDA margin by FY28, with expansion funded internally.

Hexa Perspective

The quarter confirms Umiya Mobile's ability to execute rapid store-led growth, a strategy that has delivered a 41% revenue CAGR over five years. The challenge is that this growth is not yet translating into structural profitability or strong cash generation.

Investors are weighing the scaling potential against the thin margins inherent in phone retail. The 3% EBITDA margin target for FY28 is a critical benchmark. Hitting it depends on operational efficiency in new markets and a successful shift toward higher-margin B2B sales, both of which carry execution risk.
