Britannia (BRITANNIA) Q2 FY27's Profit Growth Lags Behind a Strong Revenue Surge

A 13% volume jump drove Britannia's 15.6% revenue growth, but profit rose only 10.8% as input costs climbed sharply.

By Abhinav Singhvi, Founder & CEO Hexawealth · Created 9 September 2026

Britannia Industries reported robust Q2 revenue growth of 15.6%, powered by a 13% increase in volumes. However, profit growth lagged at 10.8%, as rising costs for palm oil, milk, and fuel squeezed margins.

For India's largest biscuit maker, the September quarter was a story of demand returning but costs refusing to retreat. Britannia Industries delivered its strongest volume-led growth in recent quarters, yet profitability told a different tale.

The numbers show the split. Revenue rose 15.6% year-on-year to ₹5,598 crore, while profit grew 10.8% to ₹726 crore. The net profit margin contracted by 50 basis points to 13% compared to last year. Sequentially, performance improved sharply from a soft Q1.

Why the bottom line couldn't keep up

Growth was broad-based, led by a 13% volume increase reported by Business Standard. Adjacent bakery products grew over 20%, and the dairy segment saw double-digit growth. Yet, total expenses rose 17.2%, faster than revenue.

This was due to a sharp run-up in key input costs. According to Business Today, refined palm oil prices rose 17%, milk costs were up 16%, and industrial fuel surged 45% compared to the year-ago quarter. Management, on the earnings call, said only about half of this inflation has been passed on to consumers so far.

The pricing puzzle and a new competitor

With a large part of the market anchored at ₹5 and ₹10 price points, Britannia's ability to offset costs fully is limited. The company implemented a 3.5% price hike in the quarter and indicated more are in the works.

This comes as Reliance expands its 'Independence' biscuit range. CEO Rakshit Hargave, quoted by Reuters, downplayed the threat, noting the difficulty of disrupting these entrenched price points. However, he acknowledged the company remains watchful of the new competition.

The cost pressure is not fleeting

Management commentary suggests the margin squeeze has room to run. The company remains "watchful of inflationary pressures," as stated in its earnings release. While a negative cash conversion cycle provides liquidity, the valuation at a 46.5% premium to the industry PE leaves little room for error.

The stock fell 5% post-results, as reported by Business Today, reflecting market concern over the profitability gap. Brokerage views are mixed; Prabhudas Lilladher maintained a Buy, while MarketsMojo rates it a Hold, citing expensive valuations.

Key Points

  • Revenue growth of 15.6% was driven by a strong 13% volume increase across channels and product segments.
  • Net profit margin contracted by 50 basis points YoY to 13%, as input cost inflation of 17-45% in key items outpaced price hikes.
  • Management expects further calibrated price increases but faces limited flexibility in the critical ₹5/₹10 price segment.
  • The stock reaction was negative, with shares falling 5%, highlighting investor focus on margin protection amid high valuations.

Hexa Perspective

Britannia's quarter confirms a robust demand recovery, a clear positive. The tension lies in the mismatch between this volume momentum and the sticky, broad-based inflation in its raw material basket.

The path to margin recovery now hinges on a delicate balance: further price hikes must land without stalling the volume momentum, especially with a large competitor testing the waters. The next few quarters will show if the company's market strength allows it to navigate this squeeze, or if the cost wall proves too high to climb.
