The paintmaker's net profit surged 28.6% year-on-year, driven by price increases and strong decorative demand, though margin sustainability is the key question.
Berger Paints started FY27 with a 12% revenue rise and a 29% jump in profit. The growth was powered by price increases and a strong decorative segment, but management's guidance suggests margins may normalize.
Berger Paints entered the new fiscal year with a clear mandate: defend margins against rising input costs while holding volume. The first quarter shows it managed both, delivering profit growth that far outpaced sales. A combination of strategic price increases and resilient demand in its core decorative business provided the lift.
The numbers tell a story of pricing power. Consolidated revenue reached ₹3,584 crore, up 12% from a year ago. Profit climbed even faster, rising 28.6% to ₹405 crore. This pushed the net profit margin to 11.3%, a 150 basis point improvement. Sequentially, sales jumped 25% from a seasonally softer fourth quarter.

Growth was led by the decorative paints segment, which Investing.com reported delivered its strongest performance in 12 quarters. Management cited an 8.4% volume increase, but value growth was higher at 12.7%, indicating effective price realization. The Economic Times noted that price hikes across categories were a key driver, with the full benefit expected in coming quarters.
This pricing was a necessary shield. CEO Abhijit Roy told the Business Standard that inflation in crude-linked raw materials, stemming from West Asia conflicts, moderated gross margins. However, stringent cost control and operating efficiencies allowed the company to report an operating profit margin slightly above its guided range.
Not all segments fired equally. While automotive coatings saw strong double-digit growth aided by lower GST rates, other industrial coatings had a muted quarter. As per the Economic Times, price increases in these segments were implemented late in the period and only partially reflected in revenues. This timing gap capped growth but sets up a potential tailwind for Q2 as these hikes fully flow through.
Management's forward view is cautiously optimistic. They expect double-digit revenue growth to sustain in FY27, supported by festive demand and distribution expansion. For Q2, Arthneeti.com reported guidance for volume growth of 7.5-8% and price realization of 7.5-8.5%. Yet, the company firmly reaffirmed its full-year operating margin guidance of 15-17%, despite posting a Q1 margin near the top of that band.
This reaffirmation is a signal. It suggests the company sees the current margin level, buoyed by seasonal mix and partial pricing benefits, as a peak. The coming quarters will test its ability to hold margins amid intense competition and raw material volatility.
Key Points
Berger Paints' quarter demonstrates effective navigation of a tough cost environment. The 150 bps margin expansion is credible, built on pricing and mix rather than just a benign input cost backdrop. The sustainability of this margin profile is the central debate.
The guidance for margins to settle back into the mid-point of its range acknowledges the seasonality of Q1 and the persistent competitive intensity from new entrants. The company's ability to achieve its higher price realization guidance for Q2 will be a critical test of its pricing power in a market where discounting has been aggressive. For now, the results show a company executing on its levers, but the durability of those gains remains a question for the next few quarters.
