Shankara Building Products (SHANKARA) Q2 FY27 Swings to Profit as Revenue Jumps 31%

The building materials retailer posted a net profit of ₹4.53 crore in Q2 FY27, a sharp turnaround from a loss a year ago, though higher finance costs weighed on margins.

By Abhinav Swaroop, CFA, Chief Business Officer: Hexawealth · Created 5 November 2026

Shankara Building Products reported a consolidated net profit of ₹4.53 crore for Q2 FY27, reversing a year-ago loss. Revenue grew 31.3% year-on-year to ₹367.46 crore, but finance costs surged 47.4%, capping net profit margin at 1.2%.

For Shankara Building Products, the September quarter was about climbing out of a hole. After a loss a year ago, a 31% surge in revenue powered a return to profit, but the cost of that growth kept the bottom line thin.

The numbers show a clear turnaround. Revenue reached ₹367.46 crore, up from ₹279.91 crore in Q2 FY26. Net profit landed at ₹4.53 crore, a swing from a ₹5.16 crore loss. Sequentially, both sales and profit improved from a weak Q1.

The cost of growth

Revenue growth was driven by a strong recovery in sales volume and product mix, according to an analysis by Arthneeti. However, the path to profit was narrow. Finance costs jumped 47.4% year-on-year to ₹5.04 crore, which Scanx.trade attributed to higher borrowing levels.

This kept net profit margin at just 1.2%. The strain is visible in the trailing-twelve-month margin of 1.0%, showing profitability remains a persistent challenge.

A reliance beyond core operations

A significant portion of the quarter's pre-tax profit did not come from core operations. Other income contributed ₹2.95 crore, or about 48% of the profit before tax. This was a massive increase from a minimal amount a year ago, as noted by Flash Finance.

While this boosted the headline profit, it highlights the company's ongoing struggle to generate strong earnings from its main business of selling building products.

The road ahead

Management has set an operating margin target of 17-18% going forward, as per the Arthneeti presentation. Achieving this will require taming the finance costs that rose with new term loans. The company's plan to add 4-5 new stores or fulfillment centers per year, as mentioned by Multibagg.ai, suggests a focus on measured expansion.

The stock rose nearly 6% on the results day, closing at ₹118.86. Yet, it remains down 10% over the past year, reflecting the market's caution amid these mixed signals of recovery and cost pressure.

Key Points

  • Consolidated revenue grew 31.3% year-on-year to ₹367.46 crore, driving a return to profitability.
  • Net profit margin remained thin at 1.2%, pressured by a 47.4% surge in finance costs.
  • Nearly half of the pre-tax profit came from other income, underscoring weak core profitability.
  • The company is targeting a significant expansion in operating margin to 17-18% in future periods.

Hexa Perspective

The quarter marks a step forward from deep losses, but the progress is fragile. Revenue growth is encouraging, yet the high cost of debt and reliance on other income show the core model is not yet generating healthy returns. For the turnaround to sustain, the company must demonstrate it can grow sales without a parallel rise in borrowing costs. Investors are rightly weighing the top-line momentum against these persistent margin headwinds.
