Kokuyo Camlin (KOKUYOCMLN) Q2 FY27 Profit Plunges 67% as Costs Overwhelm Sales Growth

Kokuyo Camlin's Q2 FY27 saw revenue rise 6.5% year-on-year, but net profit collapsed by two-thirds as operating margins contracted sharply.

By Vinayak Gandhi, CFA · Created 5 November 2026

Kokuyo Camlin's September quarter revenue grew to ₹185.6 crore, but net profit fell 67% to ₹2.6 crore. A severe operating margin squeeze, with costs rising faster than sales, drove the profitability collapse.

For Kokuyo Camlin, the September quarter was a story of sales growth that never reached the bottom line. Revenue inched forward, but profitability collapsed under the weight of rising costs, leaving the stationery maker with a net profit that was two-thirds smaller than a year ago.

Sales rose 6.5% year-on-year to ₹185.6 crore, but net profit plunged 67.3% to just ₹2.6 crore. The quarter was also sharply weaker than the preceding June period, with revenue down 19% and profit down 65%. The net profit margin compressed to 1.4%, down 310 basis points from last year.

Why margins collapsed

The primary driver was a severe contraction in operating profitability. According to Flash Finance, the company's operating profit fell 46% year-on-year to ₹8.7 crore. The operating profit margin shrank by 458 basis points to 4.7%.

This suggests costs rose much faster than the top line could keep up. Total expenses for the quarter grew 11.2% year-on-year, outpacing the 6.5% revenue growth. The profit was almost entirely from core operations, with other income contributing a minimal ₹0.3 crore.

The management view and outlook

Management has not provided explicit forward guidance, according to a StockFin.ai analysis. However, one report from Arthneeti suggests the company's presentation indicated an "operating margin expansion momentum likely to continue." This outlook appears optimistic against the current quarter's sharp compression.

The company is also navigating minor regulatory issues. It received a GST demand order of about ₹66 lakh from Tamil Nadu authorities, which it plans to appeal.

A valuation disconnect

Investors have been pricing in the challenges. The stock has fallen 24% over the past year, closing at ₹75.24 in early November. Yet, it still trades at a significant premium.

The price-to-earnings ratio stands at 63.7, which is an 84% premium to the industry average of 34.7. This valuation gap persists even as profitability metrics like return on equity remain subdued at 6.2%.

Key Points

  • Revenue grew 6.5% year-on-year to ₹185.6 crore, but net profit collapsed 67.3% to ₹2.6 crore.
  • Operating profit margin contracted sharply by 458 basis points to 4.7%, indicating costs rose faster than sales.
  • The stock trades at a P/E of 63.7, an 84% premium to the industry, despite a 24% share price decline over the past year.
  • Management has not provided formal guidance, though one report cites an optimistic margin outlook.

Hexa Perspective

The quarter reveals a business struggling with fundamental operating leverage. Sales growth is not translating into profit, a sign that either pricing power is weak or input cost inflation is acute. The sequential drop from a stronger Q1 also points to potential demand volatility.

The high valuation premium seems disconnected from these operational realities. For the stock to justify its multiple, Kokuyo Camlin needs to demonstrate a clear and sustained path to margin recovery, which this quarter's numbers do not yet provide.
