The railway PSU's net profit was nearly unchanged year-on-year as one-time costs and input inflation squeezed profitability.
IRCTC reported an 18.1% jump in Q1 FY27 revenue, driven by its catering segment. However, net profit remained flat as margins contracted sharply due to one-off HR costs and rising input prices.
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) delivered a quarter of contrasts. While revenue surged on the back of strong demand for its catering services, profitability barely budged, highlighting a significant squeeze on margins.
Revenue for the quarter ended June 2026 stood at ₹1,369.53 crore, an 18.1% increase from the same period last year. However, profit after tax (PAT) was nearly flat at ₹330.16 crore, just a 0.2% decline year-on-year. This resulted in a sharp 440 basis point drop in the net profit margin to 24.1%, down from 28.5% in Q1 FY26.
Sequentially, revenue declined 6.2% from the March quarter, a seasonally strong period. Profit, however, managed a slight 1.2% improvement quarter-on-quarter.

Key Points
The divergence between top-line growth and bottom-line performance was driven by significant margin pressure across key business segments. According to management commentary reported by outlets like CNBC TV18 and Fortune India, EBITDA margin contracted sharply to around 28.2% from 34.3% a year ago.
The catering segment, which saw revenue jump 33.8% to ₹732 crore, faced margin compression. Management cited a one-time provision of ₹10 crore for gratuity increases, a ₹4 crore impact from customer-centric pilot projects on six trains, and an inability to claim input tax credit on GST for Vande Bharat services.
Margins in the high-margin internet ticketing segment also moderated. According to reports from inve.money, this was due to investments in the NGET infrastructure refresh and maintenance charges. The Rail Neer (packaged water) segment was hit by a ₹6 crore increase in material costs due to geopolitical tensions, as noted in an earnings call summary.

Despite the margin squeeze, management struck an optimistic tone in its earnings call, describing the quarter as one of "resilient performance." They highlighted robust growth in tourism revenue, which increased 13.5% year-on-year with improving margins.
The long-term outlook for the business remains positive, supported by Indian Railways' aggressive expansion plans. According to CNBC TV18, the ministry plans to introduce over 200 new Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains over the next three to five years, creating fresh opportunities for IRCTC's catering and tourism services.
Furthermore, a massive technological upgrade is underway. Indian Railways is rolling out a next-generation Passenger Reservation System capable of handling over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, as reported by Mathrubhumi. This should support the scalability and reliability of IRCTC's core ticketing platform.
Investors reacted negatively to the mixed results. The stock closed at ₹497.5 on the results date, down 1.38% from the previous close, according to The Hindu Business Line. Over the past year, the share price has fallen 31.4%, reflecting broader concerns over margin pressures and an upcoming government stake dilution via an offer for sale.
Despite the decline, the stock trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 28.4, a slight premium to its industry P/E of 26.2. Analyst sentiment remains divided; NDTV Profit reported that out of nine analysts, six maintain a 'buy' rating with an average 12-month price target implying a 26.4% upside.
The core challenge for IRCTC is translating its strong revenue momentum, led by an indispensable monopoly in railway services, back into the high-profitability growth investors have historically expected. With net profit margin now below its 25.7% trailing-twelve-month average, the coming quarters will test management's ability to navigate cost pressures while capitalizing on railway modernization and tourism demand.
