India's largest brewer saw profit soar 191% year-on-year as premium volumes jumped 38%, driving a sharp margin recovery despite a sequential dip.
United Breweries' Q2 FY27 profit nearly tripled to ₹135 crore, fueled by a 38% surge in premium beer sales. The company's margin recovery, driven by premiumisation and cost discipline, marks a sharp turnaround from a weak year-ago quarter.
India's largest beer company has turned a corner. United Breweries' second quarter shows a powerful recovery, where premium brands and disciplined execution overcame a tough year-ago period marred by heavy monsoon and cost pressures. Profit nearly tripled year-on-year, but a sequential dip from the summer peak reveals the business's seasonal rhythm.
The numbers tell a story of two comparisons. Against a weak Q2 last year, revenue grew 24% to ₹4,623 crore and profit surged 191% to ₹135 crore. The net profit margin expanded by 170 basis points to 2.9%. Sequentially, both revenue and profit fell about 20%, a typical seasonal decline from the peak summer quarter.

The explosive profit growth was powered by a decisive shift upmarket. According to NDTV Profit, premium beer volumes surged 38% during the quarter, with Heineken Silver growing 67% and Kingfisher Ultra up 44%. This mix shift, alongside price increases, drove a 194-basis-point improvement in gross margin. Management's focus on premiumisation, a key part of its EverGreen strategy, is now delivering tangible margin accretion.
While premiumisation lifted the top line, cost pressures from the Middle East conflict persisted. Management had earlier estimated a ₹350-400 crore FY27 impact from packaging and logistics inflation. However, disciplined pricing and productivity initiatives helped offset about half of this headwind. The company also reported stronger free operating cash flow, supporting future investments. Notably, NDTV Profit reported the profit figure included ₹36.89 crore in interest on income-tax refunds, providing a one-time boost.
The broader industry backdrop is turning favourable. As per The Economic Times, state-level tax changes are making spirits more expensive relative to beer, driving a shift in consumer preference. Beer volumes nationally grew 17% in the June quarter. Recent reforms in key states like Karnataka, which is shifting to an alcohol-content-based tax, are expected to boost affordability and volume growth in the economy segment where UBL holds a strong share.
Management, cited by NDTV Profit, expects double-digit revenue growth for FY27, with the premium portfolio growing more than 20%. The company plans to increase commercial investments to sustain this momentum, while continuing to focus on cost control and productivity.
Key Points
The quarter confirms United Breweries' premiumisation strategy is working, transforming its profit profile. The 170 bps year-on-year margin expansion, even with a tax-refund tailwind, shows operating leverage is returning.
The path ahead hinges on two forces: sustaining the premium momentum against inflationary costs, and capitalising on regulatory tailwinds in large states. If the policy-led volume recovery in the mass market materialises as expected, it could provide a dual engine for growth alongside the premium surge. The valuation, at a significant premium to the industry, already prices in this improved trajectory, leaving little room for execution slips.
