Tata Elxsi Profit Stalls as Costs Offset Strong Revenue Growth

The design services firm posted a 15% yearly revenue gain but profit was flat sequentially as wage hikes and lower other income squeezed margins.

Tata Elxsi's Q2 FY27 showed resilient 15% YoY revenue growth, yet profit remained flat. Higher employee costs and lower other income pressured margins, even as operational efficiency improved.

For Tata Elxsi, the story of its September quarter is one of resilient demand meeting persistent cost pressure. The design and engineering services provider continued to win strategic deals in automotive, media, and healthcare, driving revenue higher. Yet, the bottom line tells a different tale, as profit growth stalled completely, revealing the squeeze from within.

The numbers show the split. Revenue rose 15% year-on-year to ₹1,055.7 crore and grew 3.4% from the June quarter. Net profit, however, was nearly unchanged at ₹170.3 crore, marking a slight 0.2% sequential dip. The net profit margin contracted 80 basis points from a year ago to 16.1%.

Why profit growth hit a wall

Growth was broad-based, with all three key verticals contributing. The Transportation unit, which makes up over half of software services revenue, grew 2% sequentially in constant currency, according to the company's earnings release. Media & Communications grew 3.4%, and Healthcare rose 3.5%. New multi-year deals in connected vehicles and generative AI, noted by PR Newswire, point to a healthy pipeline.

The profit stagnation, however, came from two sides. First, employee benefit expenses jumped 15% year-on-year, as reported by The Economic Times, due to company-wide salary revisions implemented in the quarter. Second, other income fell sharply to ₹35 crore from ₹49 crore a year ago. These factors absorbed the gains from improved operational efficiency, which saw the EBITDA margin expand 70 basis points sequentially to 21.9%.

The efficiency push and its limits

Management successfully offset some wage pressure through better execution. The company's focus on delivery excellence and the roll-off of one-time costs from prior quarters helped, as mentioned in the earnings call transcript from Investing.com. Utilization improved to 78%, and the firm maintains an industry-leading 25-75 onsite-offshore mix.

Yet, this operational leverage has its limits. The annual wage hike is a recurring reset, and the decline in other income is a meaningful headwind. With net profit margin now 60 basis points below the trailing twelve-month average of 16.7%, the path to restoring last year's profitability is not immediate.

What comes next

Looking ahead, management expects the second half of FY27 to be better than the first on a year-on-year basis. Confidence stems from continued growth in U.S. and India automotive, momentum in media, and better visibility in healthcare. Early-stage businesses like aerospace and smart manufacturing are also contributing, though deals there take time to scale.

The key will be whether revenue growth can outpace the cost structure. The company told analysts it is focusing on pyramid management—shifting work to more junior staff over the next few quarters—to support margins. With salary hikes done for the year, the focus turns to driving utilization higher from 78% toward historical peaks.

Key Points

  • Revenue growth remained healthy at 15% YoY, supported by all key verticals and strategic deal wins in AI and connected vehicles.
  • Net profit was flat sequentially as a 15% rise in employee costs and lower other income offset operational efficiency gains.
  • EBITDA margin expanded 70 bps QoQ to 21.9%, demonstrating the company's ability to manage costs amid wage revisions.
  • The outlook for H2 FY27 is positive, with management expecting year-on-year improvement driven by core verticals and emerging segments.

Hexa Perspective

Tata Elxsi's quarter illustrates the classic tension in high-skill services: demand is present, but it is expensive to fulfill. The 15% revenue growth confirms its relevance in strategic, software-defined product engineering. The flat profit, however, shows that the margin recovery anticipated after last quarter's reset is proving gradual.

The investment case now hinges on the slope of that recovery. With wage hikes absorbed and utilization having room to climb, operational leverage could finally lift profits in coming quarters. But this requires the current deal momentum to hold, especially in its large transportation vertical, where global automotive R&D budgets remain the ultimate driver.
