A 45% yearly profit jump is overshadowed by auditor warnings and a massive quarterly loss from last quarter.
Reliance Power reported a 45% yearly rise in net profit for Q1 FY27, but the result is clouded by a severe loss in the prior quarter and auditor concerns over its ability to continue as a going concern.
Reliance Power returned to profitability in the first quarter of FY27, but the headline improvement is set against a backdrop of deep financial stress and auditor warnings about its future. The company swung to a consolidated net profit of ₹64.71 crore from a massive loss in the prior quarter, yet the stock's sharp decline over the past year reflects persistent investor worries over debt and legal challenges.
The numbers show a modestly growing top line and a significant year-on-year profit gain. Revenue for the quarter ended June 2026 came in at ₹1,956.32 crore, up 3.8% from a year ago. Net profit jumped 44.8% to ₹64.71 crore, lifting the net profit margin to 3.3% from 2.4% in Q1 FY26. However, the quarter-on-quarter comparison is distorted by an exceptional item. Profit surged from a loss of ₹494.0 crore in Q4 FY26, a period marred by a one-off impairment charge.

The profit recovery was driven more by cost control than operational strength. According to analysis from StockWatch, the 44.8% yearly PAT gain was fuelled mainly by lower finance and administrative costs, rather than core business improvement. Finance costs fell, while fuel expenses—the largest cost component—rose over 10% year-on-year, pressuring the operating margin. ScanX Trade noted the EBITDA margin contracted to 28.75% from 29.97% a year ago as fuel cost increases outpaced revenue growth.
Management's outlook, as reported by Univest, points toward a focus on revenue scaling and margin improvement for the rest of FY27, supported by sector tailwinds. The broader power sector is seeing robust demand, with electricity consumption in the April-June quarter up around 8% year-on-year, according to a report cited by BusinessWorld.
Yet, these operational figures are overshadowed by severe balance sheet and legal risks. During the quarter, a lender to subsidiary Samalkot Power Limited invoked Reliance Power's corporate guarantee over a ₹1,841.96 crore default and initiated insolvency proceedings against the parent company. As a result, StockWatch reports that both standalone and consolidated auditors have flagged a material uncertainty regarding the company's ability to continue as a going concern. This casts a long shadow over the quarterly profit. The stock has reflected this deep anxiety, falling 46.9% over the past year to close at ₹22.98 on the results date.
