Angel One's profit surged 58% year-on-year despite flat revenue, driven by record client funding and disciplined cost management.
Angel One's Q2 FY27 profit soared 58% YoY to ₹335 crore, even as revenue held flat. The jump was powered by a record client funding book and sharp cost reductions, pushing the net profit margin to 23.5%.
Angel One’s latest quarter shows a business learning to earn more from its existing users, even when trading activity softens. Revenue was essentially flat, but profit surged 58% from a year ago as the company squeezed more value from its massive client base and kept a tight lid on costs.
The numbers tell a story of efficiency. Revenue for the September quarter was ₹1,427 crore, nearly unchanged from the previous quarter but up 19% from last year. Profit, however, leapt to ₹335 crore, a 45% jump sequentially and a 58% rise year-on-year. This pushed the net profit margin to 23.5%, a significant expansion from 17.6% a year ago.

Two forces drove profitability higher while revenue paused. First, the client funding book, which provides margin trading facilities, hit a record average of ₹7,450 crore, up 40.5% from last year, as reported by CNBC TV18. This steady stream of interest income now makes up over a third of total revenue, cushioning the business from pure trading volatility.
Second, costs fell sharply. Employee expenses dropped nearly 5% from the prior quarter, and other operating expenses fell 27% sequentially, according to an ICICI Securities note cited by DSIJ. Management attributed this to improved productivity, a return-to-office push, and the absence of the heavy IPL sponsorship costs that weighed down the June quarter.
This quarter underscores Angel One's strategic shift. As per its investor presentation highlighted by Investing.com, broking now contributes about 55% of total gross revenue, down from roughly 60% a year ago. Interest income and newer streams like credit distribution are filling the gap.

Wealth management assets under management surged 160% year-on-year to ₹16,000 crore. While still small, distribution revenue grew 52% from last year. Management told analysts on the earnings call that they expect this segment to reach low double-digit revenue contribution in two to three years.
Can this level of cost control continue? Management has guided for full-year employee costs to remain flat at around ₹1,100 crore. However, with headcount steady at about 3,050, much of the recent savings came from one-time factors like slowed hiring and the IPL spend cycling out.
The company's annual guidance is for a standalone operating margin of approximately 45%, which includes future IPL costs. The Q2 standalone margin of 48.9% was above that range, offering a buffer. Future margin improvement, as management noted, will depend more on revenue growth than further cost cuts.
Key Points
Angel One’s quarter is a clear win on efficiency, proving it can deliver strong earnings even when its core broking engine idles. The rapid growth in client funding and wealth AUM shows the platform model is working, gradually reducing dependence on fickle trading volumes.
The catch is that the stellar margin expansion was flattered by a favorable comparison. The real test is whether revenue can re-accelerate to drive the next leg of profit growth, especially as the low-hanging fruit on costs has been picked. For now, the business is building a more resilient foundation, one funded increasingly by its own customers.
