The state-owned refiner's revenue nearly doubled year-on-year, but a one-off gain and softer core margins temper the underlying profit picture.
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals reported a sharp turnaround to a net profit of ₹946 crore in Q1 FY27, as revenue surged 98% year-on-year. The results were boosted by a one-time gain and higher throughput.
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) swung back to a consolidated net profit of ₹945.7 crore in the quarter ended June 2026, a dramatic reversal from a loss of ₹270.7 crore a year ago. The state-owned refiner’s revenue from operations nearly doubled, surging 98.2% year-on-year to ₹41,609 crore, driven by a sharp recovery in refinery throughput and supportive market conditions.
The headline numbers paint a picture of robust growth, but a closer look at the quarterly trajectory reveals a more nuanced performance. While revenue jumped 46% sequentially from a low base in the March quarter, the underlying profitability of the core refining business faced pressure.

The massive year-on-year profit growth is flattered by a weak base. The year-ago quarter was hit by a planned refinery shutdown and inventory losses, which dragged gross refining margins (GRM) down to about $3.9 per barrel. This quarter, throughput recovered strongly to 4.43 million metric tonnes, up 25.9% from the year-ago period.
However, the sequential profit surge of over 700% was significantly aided by a one-time exceptional gain of ₹471.76 crore, recognized from a revision in petroleum product prices for prior-period supplies. Excluding this, the adjusted profit is estimated to be around ₹590 crore. At the same time, core operating margins came under pressure. According to Prabhudas Lilladher, MRPL's implied GRM softened to about $8.3 per barrel in Q1 FY27 from a reported $11.2 per barrel in Q4 FY26, weighed down by the Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) and elevated crude costs.
Management has guided for an annual capital expenditure of approximately ₹1,500 crore for FY27 and remains focused on further reducing debt, which stood at a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.01. The company has also opted for a lower corporate tax rate, providing a lasting tailwind to earnings.
The stock market reaction to the results was initially muted, with shares edging up only slightly on the announcement day, suggesting the market had priced in the recovery and was looking past the one-off boost. Analysts at Prabhudas Lilladher retained a 'Hold' rating with a target price of ₹150, citing near-term earnings exposure to SAED and crude price volatility.
The key challenge for MRPL will be to sustain profitability in the coming quarters without the support of exceptional items, as it navigates government levies and global crude oil price swings.
