Revenue surged 46% year-on-year, but profit fell sequentially as a strategic shift to recycled gold and higher employee costs pressured profitability.
Kalyan Jewellers posted strong 45.7% YoY revenue growth in Q1 FY27, but net profit fell 14.9% sequentially. The margin squeeze was driven by a higher share of recycled gold transactions and rising costs.
Kalyan Jewellers entered the quarter with the momentum of a record year, but the story quickly became about the cost of its own growth strategy. The jeweller delivered a 45.7% surge in revenue year-on-year, yet profit fell 14.9% from the previous quarter as margins came under unexpected pressure.
The numbers show a business growing fast but earning less on each rupee of sales. Consolidated revenue reached ₹10,589 crore, a solid 3.1% increase from the seasonally strong March quarter. Profit after tax, however, declined to ₹349 crore, pulling the net profit margin down to 3.3% from 4.0% last quarter.

Growth was broad-based, with a 28% same-store sales rise in India and a 29% jump in the Middle East, according to Motilal Oswal. The squeeze came from a deliberate shift in sourcing. To hedge against high import duties, Kalyan pushed its 'Shine with India' campaign, boosting recycled gold's share of revenue to over 46% from 30% a year ago.
This exchange-led model is margin-dilutive, forgoing the typical bullion markup. Concurrently, standalone employee costs spiked 54%, a structural increase for talent retention. As reported by Stockwatch, these factors created a combined 0.4–0.6% headwind. A ₹41 crore customs-duty gain provided only a partial, one-off offset.
Management, in its earnings call summarized by Quartermark, has reaffirmed its full-year guidance. It expects India's PBT margin to at least match FY26's 5.5–5.6%, despite the Q1 print of around 5.1%. The recovery hinges on two levers: scaling the newer 'cash-for-gold' initiative, which is margin-accretive, and realizing another ₹60 crore in customs-duty benefits in Q2.

The asset-light FOCO expansion continues unabated, with targets of 84 new Kalyan and 50 Candere stores this year. This capital-efficient model supports the parallel goal of becoming debt-free on the non-gold-metal-loan book by September 2026.
Key Points
The quarter frames the central tension for Kalyan Jewellers: brilliant top-line execution against a stubborn profitability drag. The recycled gold shift is a smart long-term hedge but a clear short-term cost.
The guidance to recover margins this year is an ambitious bet on the rapid scaling of cash-for-gold. Investors are weighing strong market-share gains against whether this margin bridge can be crossed before festive season demand is tested. The next quarter's margin trajectory will be the critical proof point.
