The engineering services firm posted strong top-line growth but saw profitability contract due to heavy investments in its semiconductor and DLM businesses.
Cyient's Q2 FY27 revenue surged 25.5% year-on-year to ₹2,235 crore, yet net profit fell 7.3% to ₹132.5 crore. The squeeze highlights the cost of funding future growth in semiconductors and manufacturing.
Cyient’s second quarter tells a story of two engines. The core Digital Engineering and Technology (DET) business posted its highest operating margin in ten quarters, yet group profit still fell from a year ago. The tension lies in the company's heavy spending to build its next growth pillars in semiconductors and design-led manufacturing, a trade-off between today's earnings and tomorrow's scale.
Revenue for the quarter ended September 2026 rose 25.5% year-on-year to ₹2,235 crore, continuing a strong sequential climb. Profit after tax, however, declined 7.3% to ₹132.5 crore. The net profit margin compressed by 210 basis points to 5.9%, a clear sign of the investment phase the company is navigating.

Growth was broad-based. According to the company's investor presentation, the DET segment saw revenue rise 8.1% sequentially, with the recent TAO Digital acquisition contributing. The Design Led Manufacturing (DLM) business grew over 26.5% year-on-year, while the semiconductor unit posted its sixth straight quarter of sequential growth.
The profitability picture, however, was split. DET's EBIT margin hit a 10-quarter high of 14.2%, as reported by Investing.com, driven by cost optimisation. But this was offset by deep losses in the semiconductor segment, where the company is investing heavily in R&D for AI data center power products. Management told analysts these product investments are the sole driver of the segment's losses.
These strategic bets are a deliberate drag on current earnings. Employee benefit expenses rose to ₹11,731 million, and finance costs jumped with debt taken for the TAO Digital buy. Furthermore, management confirmed to Investing.com that wage hikes will be implemented in two phases across the coming quarters.

The company is confident its cost optimisation program can help hold margins near current levels despite these headwinds. It also points to a record order book for visibility. Cyient DLM's order book hit an all-time high of ₹28,137 million with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.6x, according to its presentation.
Key Points
The quarter confirms Cyient is in a sustained investment cycle. The path to improved group profitability hinges on two timelines: the semiconductor unit reaching its projected breakeven in FY28, and the DLM business translating its massive order book into operating leverage.
Until then, the stock's reaction—a 2.22% drop post-results as noted by Investing.com—reflects the market's patience being tested. Investors are weighing strong operational execution in the core business against the duration and cost of funding these high-potential, but currently loss-making, growth engines.
