The refiner's net profit surged 212% year-on-year despite a sequential drop in revenue, powered by a record gross refining margin of $20.41 per barrel.
Chennai Petroleum's Q2 FY27 profit jumped to ₹2,247 crore on a massive expansion in refining margins, even as revenue fell 25% quarter-on-quarter. The company declared an interim dividend of ₹25 per share.
For a refiner, the quarter is decided by the spread between the cost of crude and the price of its products. Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) caught that spread at a generational high, turning a modest revenue increase into a profit bonanza. The company's net profit for Q2 FY27 more than tripled from a year ago, even as its top line shrank from the previous quarter.
The numbers tell a story of margin power overwhelming sales volume. Revenue of ₹22,055 crore was up 10% from a year ago but down 25% from the June quarter. Profit, however, leapt 212% year-on-year and 118% sequentially to ₹2,247 crore. The net profit margin expanded to 10.2%, a sharp 660 basis-point improvement from last September.

The entire profit surge sits on the margin line. According to reports from ETEnergyWorld and The Times of India, CPCL's average gross refining margin (GRM) more than doubled to $20.41 per barrel from $9.04 a year ago. This included an inventory gain of $3.82 per barrel. Even stripping that out, the core GRM of roughly $16.6 was still over twice the year-ago level. Management told businessline that strong international pricing and operational tailwinds drove the performance.
The quarter's tension is between soaring margins and lower throughput. While GRMs hit a record, crude processed slipped to 2.59 million metric tonnes (MMT), down from 2.85 MMT in Q1 and 3.01 MMT a year ago, as per a StockWatch report. This explains the 25% sequential revenue drop. The company operated at 98% capacity, slightly below its H1 target, due to planned maintenance on one unit.
The margin surge generated enough cash for a generous ₹25 per share interim dividend. However, a StockWatch analysis notes H1 operating cash flow was a thin ₹25 crore after a ₹4,093 crore working-capital build, as money was tied up in receivables and inventory. On growth, a capex plan of over ₹2,000 crore is in progress, with ₹601.5 crore of work underway as of September 30.

The outlook now hinges on whether these extraordinary refining margins hold. Reports suggest the regional Singapore GRM averaged nearly $20.5 per barrel late in the quarter, driven by global supply disruptions. Any normalization will pressure profits, though CPCL's recent Navratna status grants it more independence for future expansion.
Key Points
CPCL's quarter is a pure margin story, demonstrating how a refiner can deliver blockbuster profits even with lower sales. The key question is durability. The $20+ GRM is a peak, not a plateau, tied to exceptional global supply tightness.
Investors are weighing the company's strong operational performance and new Navratna flexibility against the inherent volatility of refining cycles. The stock trades at a significant premium to analyst targets, suggesting the market is pricing in either sustained high margins or growth expectations not yet captured in formal estimates.
