Anand Rathi Strong Operating Growth Meets Stretched Valuations

Anand Rathi Wealth's Q1 profit soared 74% YoY, but the headline number is flattered by one-off gains, creating a split view on its premium valuation.

Anand Rathi Wealth reported robust Q1 growth with revenue up 17.5% and profit surging 73.6% YoY. However, a significant portion of profit came from mark-to-market gains, and the stock's high P/E multiple is drawing caution from analysts.

Anand Rathi Wealth began FY27 with a powerful profit surge, but the quarter tells two stories: one of steady underlying business momentum and another of a valuation that has raced ahead of it. The 73.6% year-on-year jump in profit is eye-catching, yet it includes a substantial one-time gain that management itself strips out to assess progress. This creates a tension between the firm's consistent execution and a stock price that some analysts now call stretched.

The numbers show broad-based strength. Revenue for the quarter ended June 2026 grew 17.5% year-on-year to ₹321.99 crore, while profit after tax reached ₹163.01 crore. Sequentially, the performance was even stronger, with profit up 57.6% from the March quarter. The most striking figure is the net profit margin, which leapt to 50.6% from 34.3% a year ago. However, this margin expansion is largely a mirage. According to the company's earnings call, a ₹96 crore mark-to-market gain on its holding in Anand Rathi Global Finance was included in other income. Excluding this and other adjustments, management-reported adjusted profit was ₹116 crore, representing a still-healthy 24% year-on-year growth on adjusted revenue of ₹336 crore.

The Engine Behind the Adjusted Growth

The core business engine remains powerful. Assets Under Management (AUM) crossed the ₹1 lakh crore milestone, growing 21% year-on-year to ₹1,06,300 crore. As reported by Investing.com, this was supported by net inflows of ₹2,743 crore despite market volatility, including ₹1,900 crore in equity mutual funds alone. The company added over 1,600 new client families in the last twelve months, bringing the total to 13,941, while client attrition measured by AUM lost was a minuscule 0.09%. This operational stability allows for operating leverage, where revenue growth outpaces cost increases. On an adjusted basis, management noted that costs grew 14.1%, below the 18.4% growth in adjusted revenue, leading to a 140 basis point expansion in the adjusted PAT margin to 34.4%.

Why the Valuation Conversation Has Shifted

Despite this steady execution, the quarter has sharpened the debate over valuation. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 63.7, a 258% premium to the industry average. This rich multiple is now facing greater scrutiny. Motilal Oswal Financial Services, as cited by The Financial Express, downgraded the stock to 'Sell', citing a "stretched" valuation of 64 times FY28 earnings and highlighting a 27% miss on EBITDA estimates due to margin compression from rising employee costs. The brokerage set a one-year target price of ₹1,700, implying a 21% downside from current levels. This reflects a growing concern that the market has priced in perfection, leaving little room for operational hiccups or a normalization of one-off gains.

A Confident Roadmap Amidst Structural Tailwinds

Management's outlook remains unequivocally confident. The company, as per the concall summary on QuarterMark, reiterated its full-year FY27 guidance of ₹1,415 crore in revenue and ₹460 crore in PAT. The first quarter delivered 24% of the revenue target and 25% of the profit target, putting it comfortably on track. The long-term vision is ambitious: CEO Feroze Azeez reiterated an aim to capture 4% market share in the Category II mutual fund space within 8-10 years, which would imply an AUM of around ₹6 lakh crore. This ambition is underpinned by a belief in powerful structural tailwinds for India's wealth management sector, including the financialisation of savings and a shift from DIY investing to professional advice, trends highlighted in the company's own communications.

Key Points

  • Headline profit surged 73.6% YoY, but a ₹96 crore mark-to-market gain significantly flattered the result; adjusted profit grew a solid 24%.
  • Core operations are robust, with AUM crossing ₹1.06 lakh crore on strong net inflows and industry-leading client retention of 99.91%.
  • Valuation is the central debate, with the stock's P/E of 63.7 leading some analysts to issue 'Sell' ratings on concerns the price has outpaced fundamentals.
  • Management is confident in its FY27 targets and a long-term goal to achieve a 4% market share in mutual fund distribution.
  • The business benefits from structural growth in Indian wealth management, but remains exposed to market sentiment and regulatory changes.

Hexa Perspective

This quarter presents a clear dichotomy. The underlying business performance is strong and consistent, characterized by scalable client acquisition, low attrition, and operating leverage. The company's guidance appears achievable, and its positioning within a structurally growing industry is enviable. However, the investment case is now overwhelmingly a question of price. The current valuation embeds exceptionally high expectations for growth and margin stability far into the future. While the one-off gain this quarter is not a recurring event, it underscores how sensitive headline numbers—and by extension, market sentiment—can be to non-operational items. For the premium to hold, Anand Rathi Wealth will need to not only meet but consistently exceed its growth targets in a competitive and cyclical industry, all while managing costs to preserve its hard-won operating leverage. The next few quarters will test whether the fundamentals can grow into the valuation, or if the valuation needs to recalibrate to the fundamentals.
