The auto tech firm posted its highest-ever quarterly revenue, driven by a 107% surge in EV sales, but profit margins compressed due to input costs and product mix.
Sona Comstar's Q1 FY27 revenue soared 52% to a record ₹1,301 crore, led by its electric vehicle business. However, net profit grew slower and margins fell, highlighting a cost squeeze that management expects to ease.
Sona Comstar is riding the electric vehicle wave, but the cost of that ride is showing. The auto tech company reported its best-ever quarterly revenue, yet profitability grew at a slower pace as rising input costs and a shift in its product mix squeezed margins.
The numbers tell a story of powerful growth with a profitability catch. Revenue for Q1 FY27 jumped 52.4% year-on-year to ₹1,301.2 crore. Profit after tax grew 46.7% to ₹178.5 crore. Sequentially, revenue inched up 3.5%, but profit slipped 4.5%. The net profit margin contracted 60 basis points from a year ago and 120 basis points from the prior quarter, landing at 13.7%.

The standout driver was the electric vehicle business. According to the company's presentation, battery electric vehicle (BEV) revenue more than doubled, surging 107% year-on-year to ₹436 crore. This now makes up a record 44% of its automotive product revenue. The company also secured ₹1,800 crore in new orders during the quarter, including a major ₹640 crore hybrid driveline win in North America.
This rapid EV growth came with a cost. Management, cited by outlets like Investing.com and Inve, attributed the margin compression to two main factors. First, input costs for steel, copper, and aluminum spiked. Second, the product mix is shifting toward lower-margin traction motors, which are growing faster than higher-margin legacy products. There is also a typical lag in passing these higher costs to automotive customers.
Management expects the margin pressure to ease. They noted that June showed sequential improvement as cost pass-throughs began, and they anticipate these recovery measures will become more visible from Q2 FY27 onwards. The company is also investing ₹500-600 crore this year in capacity expansion and its new robotics vertical, as reported by The Hindu BusinessLine.
Key Points
The quarter validates Sona Comstar's strategic pivot to electrification, with the EV business now a dominant revenue pillar. The ₹24,000 crore order book provides strong multi-year visibility. However, the margin compression reveals the near-term challenge of managing a high-growth, lower-margin product mix amid inflationary pressures. Investors are betting on the company's ability to execute its 'Sona Comstar 2.0' vision, including new robotics and DENSO joint ventures, but the stock's premium valuation leaves little room for execution missteps. The next few quarters will be critical to see if margin recovery materializes as promised.
