Shakti Pumps (SHAKTIPUMP) Q2 FY27 Profit Dives 66% as Margin Pressure Intensifies

A sharp contraction in net profit margin overshadowed modest revenue growth, highlighting persistent input cost challenges and a sequential slowdown in execution.

Shakti Pumps reported a 66% year-on-year plunge in Q2 profit despite slight revenue growth. The sharp margin contraction reflects ongoing cost pressures and a sequential execution dip, even as a strong order book provides future visibility.

Shakti Pumps’ transition to a solar energy solutions provider hit a profitability roadblock this quarter. While revenue inched up, profit collapsed by two-thirds, revealing a margin squeeze that has become the defining story of its growth phase.

The numbers show a clear divergence. Revenue for Q2 FY27 stood at ₹683.33 crore, a modest 2.5% increase from last year. Profit, however, plummeted 65.8% to ₹31.03 crore. Sequentially, both metrics weakened, with revenue down 20.4% and profit down 39.9% from a strong Q1.

Why profits fell off a cliff

The 910 basis-point collapse in net profit margin year-on-year is the core issue. Research from StockFin.ai and DSJ Insights points to a dual pressure: higher raw material costs and lower sales realisations. Management had previously flagged a 6% cost pressure from materials like copper and steel, coupled with a 4% hit from realisations, primarily in government tender business.

This pressure is structural for now, overshadowing the volume growth from solar pump installations. The comparison is also stark against an exceptionally strong Q2 last year, where a net margin of 13.6% was described by management at the time as supported by high operational leverage.

The execution dip and working capital strain

The 20% sequential revenue drop suggests a slowdown in converting its order book to sales. As of July, the company held an order book of about ₹1,000 crore, which management said was executable over two quarters. Reports suggest monsoon delays may have impacted ground-level execution.

Concurrently, working capital is under strain. TradingView News highlighted rising receivables and negative operating cash flow, a common challenge for firms dependent on government-linked projects. This ties up cash and increases financing costs, further pressuring profitability.

The path to recovery hinges on integration

Management’s stated remedy is backward integration into solar cell and module manufacturing. A 0.5 GW facility was slated for September 2026, with a larger 2.2 GW plant by September 2027. Ajcon Global Services notes this integration could improve EBITDA margins by about 3 percentage points.

The near-term trigger is the rollout of PM-KUSUM 2.0, which remains pending clearance. This government scheme is a major demand driver, and its delay adds uncertainty. For now, the company is navigating a phase where top-line growth from solar pumps is not translating to the bottom line.

Key Points

  • Shakti Pumps' Q2 FY27 net profit fell 65.8% year-on-year to ₹31.03 crore, while revenue grew marginally by 2.5% to ₹683.33 crore.
  • Net profit margin contracted sharply by 910 basis points to 4.5%, driven by higher raw material costs and lower realisations on government orders.
  • A sequential revenue decline of 20.4% points to a potential slowdown in order book execution, possibly impacted by monsoon conditions.
  • The company's recovery thesis rests on backward integration into solar manufacturing, expected to boost margins, and the clearance of the PM-KUSUM 2.0 scheme.
  • Rising trade receivables and working capital intensity, as noted in analyst reports, remain key financial risks alongside near-term margin pressure.

Hexa Perspective

Shakti Pumps is caught between two narratives. The long-term story of solar adoption and vertical integration is intact, backed by a solid order book. The present reality is a severe profitability crunch that shows no sign of immediate relief.

The next few quarters will test whether margin improvement from the new manufacturing facility can outpace persistent cost pressures. Until then, earnings momentum is likely to remain subdued, keeping investor focus on cash flow and execution timelines over top-line growth.
