The state-owned telecom and ICT firm posted a 20.5% revenue surge but saw net profit decline due to a one-off charge and underlying margin pressure.
RailTel's Q2 FY27 saw a sharp divergence: revenue grew over 20% year-on-year to ₹1,146 crore, but net profit fell 10% to ₹68.6 crore. The profit drop was driven by a larger exceptional charge and margin compression in the fast-growing project business.
RailTel Corporation's September quarter presented a classic growth-versus-profitability puzzle. The state-owned telecom and ICT services provider delivered a robust 20.5% jump in revenue, yet its bottom line shrank by nearly 10% from a year ago. The story is one of strong top-line execution being undermined by a significant one-off cost and a persistent squeeze on margins.
The numbers tell the split story clearly. Revenue for Q2 FY27 stood at ₹1,146.14 crore, up sharply from ₹951.36 crore a year earlier. Sequentially, revenue jumped 28.3% from the June quarter. However, profit after tax (PAT) fell to ₹68.56 crore from ₹76.07 crore a year ago, a 9.9% decline. The net profit margin compressed by 200 basis points to 6.0%.

The profit decline had two clear drivers. First, the company booked a one-time exceptional loss of ₹32.2 crore, as reported by NDTV Profit. This charge was nearly double the ₹16.1 crore recorded in the same quarter last year. Second, underlying profitability faced pressure. The EBITDA margin narrowed to 15.4% from 16.2% a year ago, according to the same report.
This margin pressure is linked to the changing business mix. The Project Work Services segment, which grew 28.3% year-on-year to ₹749.20 crore, now contributes about 65% of total revenue. Management has historically guided for margins of 4-5% in this business, which is lower than the more stable Telecom Services segment. As this lower-margin segment grows faster, it dilutes the company's overall profitability.
The revenue growth was powered by strong execution in this project business. The company also continues to secure new orders, including a ₹20 crore data centre contract from Munitions India Limited announced alongside the results. Its total disclosed order book stands at over ₹3,000 crore, providing visibility.
However, there is a catch. According to analysis from Stockwatch, RailTel's first-half revenue growth of about 20.3% year-on-year falls short of the full-year guidance of 25% growth maintained by management. This means execution must accelerate meaningfully in the second half to meet the annual target.
Key Points
The quarter underscores RailTel's transition from a pure telecom carrier to a project-led ICT executor. Growth is visible and the order pipeline is healthy, but the path to higher earnings is now gated by margin discipline and the normalization of exceptional costs.
Investors are weighing robust revenue visibility against profitability that is being reshaped by a lower-margin business mix. The stock's discount to the industry reflects this uncertainty. The next few quarters will test management's ability to convert its strong order book into profits that keep pace with the top line.
