Gensol Engineering's Profitability Squeeze Masks Strong YoY Revenue Growth

Gensol's Q3 FY25 revenue surged over 30% year-on-year, but profit growth lagged, and net profit margin declined sharply.

Gensol Engineering posted a 30.5% YoY revenue increase in Q3 FY25, yet profit growth was a modest 3.8% as net profit margin compressed by 130 basis points.

Gensol Engineering delivered a quarter of contrasting signals. While revenue from its solar EPC and EV leasing businesses grew strongly year-on-year, profitability came under significant pressure, indicating a squeeze on margins.

The company's revenue for Q3 FY25 (Quarter ended December 2024) rose 30.5% from the same period last year to ₹344.51 crore. However, profit grew at a much slower pace of 3.8% to ₹17.86 crore. This divergence highlights a compression in net profit margin, which fell 130 basis points year-on-year to 5.2%. Sequentially, the picture was softer, with revenue essentially flat and profit declining 22.1% from the previous quarter.

A look at the last five quarters shows revenue has been on a generally rising trajectory from a year ago, but profit and margins have been more volatile.

Key Points

  • The trailing twelve-month (TTM) net profit margin stands at 5.5%, slightly above the latest quarter's level.
  • The company maintains a high return on equity of 20.07%, though it carries significant leverage with a debt-to-equity ratio of 4.29.
  • The stock has faced substantial headwinds, down 52.4% over the past year, and trades at a significant premium to its industry with a P/E of 56.0.

For Gensol, the immediate challenge is to translate its robust top-line momentum into more consistent and improved bottom-line performance in the quarters ahead.
