FACT's Revenue Surge Overwhelmed by Mounting Cost Pressures

The fertiliser company posted a steep quarterly loss despite strong sales growth, as operational costs and high interest expenses squeezed margins.

FACT reported a 65% year-on-year revenue jump for Q3 FY26, but net profit swung to a loss of ₹67.9 crore. The results highlight severe margin pressure from rising costs in a challenging fertiliser market.

The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) delivered a quarter of stark contrasts. While revenue surged impressively, the company swung to a steep loss, underscoring severe operational challenges in a tough fertiliser market.

Revenue for the quarter ended December 2025 rose 65.1% year-on-year to ₹1,567.84 crore. However, net profit collapsed to a loss of ₹67.9 crore, a dramatic reversal from a profit of ₹8 crore in the same quarter last year and a profit of ₹20.86 crore in the previous quarter. The net profit margin plummeted to -4.3%, down 510 basis points from a year ago.

The following table shows the company's performance over the last five quarters:

The revenue growth was driven by higher sales volumes, according to MarketsMojo. Yet, this top-line strength was completely eroded by a collapse in operational efficiency. The company posted an operating loss, excluding other income, of ₹42.88 crore compared to a profit of ₹39.45 crore in the previous quarter. MarketsMojo reported this as FACT's worst operating margin in recent history, indicating that rising input costs have overwhelmed the benefits of higher sales.

High interest costs, which remained stubbornly high at ₹61.82 crore, continued to exert significant pressure. The company's EBIT-to-interest coverage ratio deteriorated to negative 0.69 times, indicating operating profits were insufficient to cover the interest burden. This financial strain is compounded by a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.94 and a low interest cover of 1.22, which limit financial flexibility.

Management's commentary, summarized by Quartr, included recognition of the statutory impact of new labour codes. The broader industry outlook remains challenging, with Business Standard reporting that fertiliser manufacturers are seeking higher government subsidies as raw material costs surge due to geopolitical tensions.

Despite the weak quarterly earnings, FACT's stock has shown resilience over the longer term, delivering a 3.5% return over the past year and a 205.2% return over three years. However, the current valuation appears disconnected from fundamentals, with a trailing P/E ratio of over 1000 compared to an industry average of 21.7.

The key question for FACT is whether it can regain control over its cost structure before the next quarter's results confirm a prolonged profitability squeeze.
