BPCL Swings to Loss Despite Strong Revenue Growth in Q1 FY27

Bharat Petroleum's revenue jumped 23% year-on-year, but a sharp drop in net profit margin led to a quarterly loss.

BPCL reported a 23.1% surge in Q1 FY27 revenue, but profitability collapsed, swinging from a profit to a loss of ₹1,873 crore. The net profit margin fell to -1.2%.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) delivered a quarter of stark contrasts. While revenue surged on higher fuel sales, profitability collapsed, pushing the oil marketing giant into a loss for the quarter ended June 2026. This sharp divergence highlights significant pressure on refining and marketing margins, overshadowing strong top-line performance.

The company's revenue grew 23.1% year-on-year to ₹1,59,527 crore, also rising 18.2% sequentially. However, profit after tax (PAT) swung dramatically to a loss of ₹1,873 crore, down 127.4% from the same quarter last year and 133.3% from the previous quarter. This resulted in a net profit margin of -1.2%, a steep 650 basis point decline from the 5.3% margin a year ago.

A look at the last five quarters shows the sudden shift in fortunes.

The trailing twelve-month (TTM) profit stands at ₹17,132 crore with a 3.1% margin, offering a more stable view but still reflecting the recent downturn. Meanwhile, the stock has been largely flat over the past year but has delivered strong 79.2% absolute returns over three years, supported by a robust balance sheet with a high return on equity of 28.5%.

The key question for investors is whether this quarter's loss is a temporary setback caused by volatile crude prices and inventory losses, or a sign of sustained margin pressure in the downstream business. The company's ability to restore its historically healthy profitability in the coming quarters will be critical.
