Bharat Electronics Posts Robust Revenue Growth, But Profitability Declines

Bharat Electronics reported a 25% year-on-year revenue jump for Q1 FY27, though profit growth lagged and margins contracted.

By Vinayak Gandhi, CFA

Bharat Electronics' Q1 FY27 results show a strong 24.9% YoY revenue increase to ₹5,547 crore. However, profit growth was slower at 8.8% YoY, and net profit margin fell to 19%.

Bharat Electronics (BEL) kicked off fiscal 2027 with a quarter of mixed signals. The defence PSU reported a robust 24.9% year-on-year jump in revenue, but profit growth lagged significantly, pointing to a squeeze on profitability. Sequentially, the quarter was sharply lower, reflecting the typical seasonality where Q4 is often the strongest.

The company's revenue for the quarter ended June 2026 stood at ₹5,547 crore, a solid increase from ₹4,440 crore in the same period last year. Profit after tax (PAT) grew at a slower 8.8% to ₹1,055 crore. This divergence meant the net profit margin compressed to 19.0%, down 280 basis points from the 21.8% margin seen in Q1 FY26. The trailing-twelve-month (TTM) net profit margin remains healthier at 21.4%.

A look at the recent quarterly trajectory shows the expected seasonal dip from a very strong Q4.

Key Points

  • The company maintains a pristine balance sheet with zero debt and a high interest coverage ratio of nearly 796.
  • Return on Equity (RoE) for the last fiscal year was a strong 27.4%.
  • The stock has delivered impressive long-term returns, with a 3-year CAGR of 46.6%, though it trades roughly in line with its industry's valuation.

While the quarterly profit margin dip is notable, BEL's underlying financial strength and consistent order book in the defence sector provide a stable foundation. The focus now shifts to whether the company can restore its profitability closer to its historical 22% range in the coming quarters.
