Protean's Profitability Collapses Despite Revenue Growth

Protean e-Gov Technologies posted a 19% YoY revenue increase for Q1 FY27, but profit plunged 75%. The net profit margin collapsed to just 2.3%, a steep drop from 11.3% a year ago.

Protean e-Gov Technologies delivered a quarter of stark contrasts. While revenue grew healthily year-on-year, profitability collapsed, raising questions about cost pressures and operational efficiency in the first quarter of FY27.

The company's revenue for the quarter ended June 2026 stood at ₹251 crore, a solid 19% increase from the ₹211 crore reported in Q1 FY26. However, this top-line strength was completely overshadowed by a severe profit squeeze. Profit after tax (PAT) plummeted 75.4% year-on-year to just ₹5.86 crore. Sequentially, the picture was even worse, with revenue down 18.4% from the previous quarter and profit crashing 80.7%.

The collapse in profitability is best illustrated by the net profit margin, which fell to a mere 2.3%. This represents a dramatic 900 basis point contraction from the 11.3% margin achieved in the same quarter last year. Over the last twelve months (TTM), the company's net profit margin averaged 8.0%, indicating the current quarter's performance is a significant outlier.

Key Points

  • Balance Sheet Strength: The company maintains a robust balance sheet with zero debt and a healthy interest coverage ratio of over 51 times.
  • Valuation Context: Despite the earnings decline, the stock trades at a trailing P/E of 58.9, a significant premium of over 200% to the IT industry average P/E of 19.5.
  • Share Price Pressure: The stock has declined nearly 25% over the past year, closing at ₹571.9 on the results date.

The sharp divergence between revenue growth and profit performance suggests significant margin pressure, and the coming quarters will be critical to see if Protean can restore its historically stronger profitability.
