Indegene's Strong Revenue Growth Masks Profitability Squeeze

Indegene's Q1 FY27 revenue jumped nearly 40% year-on-year, but net profit was flat as margins compressed sharply.

Indegene reported a 39.7% surge in quarterly revenue, yet profit remained virtually unchanged from last year. The net profit margin fell significantly, highlighting a profitability challenge.

Indegene's first quarter of FY27 presents a story of two diverging trends: impressive revenue growth coupled with a significant squeeze on profitability. While sales surged nearly 40% year-on-year, net profit was essentially flat, reflecting a sharp contraction in the company's net profit margin.

The digital life sciences company reported revenue of ₹1,063.1 crore for the quarter ended June 2026, a strong 5.9% sequential increase from the previous quarter. However, profit after tax (PAT) of ₹116.2 crore was virtually unchanged from the ₹116.4 crore earned in the same quarter last year. This resulted in a net profit margin of 10.9%, a substantial 440 basis point decline from the 15.3% margin in Q1 FY26.

A look at the last five quarters shows the evolving pressure on margins even as the revenue base has expanded consistently.

The quarter-on-quarter picture is more positive, with profit rebounding 45.8% from a weaker Q4. On a trailing twelve-month (TTM) basis, revenue stands at ₹3,812.8 crore with a PAT margin of 10.5%.

Key Points

  • The company maintains a robust balance sheet with zero debt and a healthy interest coverage ratio of 28.2x.
  • Return on Equity (RoE) for the period was 14.14%.
  • The stock trades at a P/E of 26.1, a significant discount to the industry average P/E of 67.5.

For Indegene, the immediate challenge is clear: translating its formidable top-line momentum back into bottom-line growth. The coming quarters will reveal if this margin compression is a temporary phase of investment or a more persistent structural shift.
